General Information about Castorano.
A small town of about 2200 inhabitants in the Ascoli Piceno province.
It is situated at 279 meters over the sea level on the hills surrounding the Tronto valley; it is only 18 Km away from the city of Ascoli Piceno and ca 25 Km from the coast.
Quite easy to get there by motorway and train. The main airport nearby is Ancona Airport and the nearest one it is the Raffaello Sanzio airport of Falconara Marittima.
History
Castorano was conquered by the Romans between the 296 and the 297 B.C. becoming in this way one of the “stationes” of the salt road which ran, probably, all the way to “Portum Truentum”, the today Port of Ascoli. Proof of this is a mile stone from the 1st century B.C. lately discovered, which is also the first element of secure dating of the village.
After the fall of the Roman Empire and the serious political and economical crises that fallowed, Castorano felled under the control of the Longobards and then under the power of the “Contea” (Shire). In the 1283, with a sales document, a man called Raynaldus de Montis Sancti Paoli established the cession to Ascoli which in 1183 had become a free town.
After this moment the history of Castorano is closely interlaced with the one of the state of Ascoli. For all the 1400 and the 1500 it remains deeply involved in the war against Fermo and its allies. It had to face assaults and destructions. This historical phase, even if tormented, appears to be the most important of the history of Castorano that then boasted a large territory, a hospital, a jail and it was the obligatory crossroad for anyone that wanted to reach the Kingdom of Napoli.
Castorano passed under the control of the church state and endured its fate and oppressive government methods until the union of Italy.
Places of interest:
- Church of Castorano
- The rural landscape (many good DOC vineyards)
